Template:Shows The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a UK science-fiction comedy show adapted from a radio version by its creator, Douglas Adams, for the BBC. It was subsequently made into a series of novels, a film, a video game, a comic book series and a towel.

Series summary

Arthur Dent (Simon Jones) wakes up to find out that his house is to be demolished to make way for a motorway; his day gets worse when he finds out that the Earth is also going to be demolished for much the same reason. Luckily for him, his best friend, Ford Prefect (David Dixon), is actually an alien writing a guide to Earth for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and beams them both off the planet just before it is destroyed. They find themselves stranded in space with former president of the universe Zaphod Beeblebrox (Mark Wing-Davey), his girlfriend Trillian (Sandra Dickinson) and depressed robot Marvin (voiced by Stephen Moore).

Westphall connections to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

  • There have been multiple references to the series in Doctor Who. At the end of "The Christmas Invasion", The Doctor mentions meeting Arthur Dent.
  • In the Doctor Who episode "Ghost Light", the Doctor says, 'Who was it said Earthmen never invite their ancestors round to dinner?' The person who said this, in fact, was not a person at all but The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy itself (that is, the book featured in the series).
  • In a Doctor Who story edited by Douglas Adams himself - "Destiny of the Daleks" - The Doctor, pinned down by fallen rubble, passed the time by reading Oolon Colluphid's Origins of the Universe. Some of Oolon Colluphid's other books - Where God Went Wrong, Some More of God's Greatest Mistakes, Who is This God Person Anyway?, Well That About Wraps it Up for God, Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Guilt But Were Too Ashamed To Ask, and Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Sex But Have Been Forced To Find Out - were mentioned in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
